Lulua masks are characterized by intricate scarification markings and geometric patterns. The are carved out of wood and dyed with a red pigment to give the mask a rich dark red colour. The top of the mask features the stubs symbolizing power and the hairstyle of the Lulua women. The masks represented the spirits among the Lulua community and were used by masqueraders who performed during circumcision rites in initiation ceremonies, they were also believed to offer protection from sorcery, witchcraft and other evil forces!
